Independent South African winemaker Berene Sauls makes a later afternoon inspection of the experimental vine blocks she planted a few weeks earlier, on November 8 in her village of Tesselaarsdal near the Hemel-en-Aarde wine region in the Western Cape province of South Africa. Sauls is a woman of color and a descendant of freed African Khoi slaves who began her winemaking career as an au pair looking after the children of Hamilton Russell Vineyards's winemaker in 2001 when she got interested in winemaking. She released her first wine in 2015 under the Tesselaarsdal label in homage to her family legacy to international critical acclaim and is one of a growing band of women who have succeeded in recent years in closing the gender gap in the world of wine, both in South Africa and globally, with a blend of determination, passion, a keen palate and an ability to think creatively. South African wineries are heading into the 2023 vintage with wine export income back to pre-pandemic levels and are expanding production in line with increasing global demand.
